Fireflies, snakes, and alligators oh my!

Well we had quite the adventure tonight in Brazos Bend State Park. Our prime mission was the observatory, but we got there before dark, so we decided to take a hike around the large lake and what an adventure that was.

We started our hike with the sun setting and as dusk came in, I heard my partner exclaim, "R., there's a firefly!" As I whipped around in excitement I saw a firefly light up. My very first sighting of a firefly! It was awesome! When we first moved here to Texas from California 2 years ago we went to the Butterly exhibit at the Natural Science Museum and I saw a display on fireflies. When we got home I googled "houston fireflies" and was bummed that there didn't seem to be many firefly sightings in the area. So, we were going to make a special trip to someplace in Louisiana, so that I could see them. Well special trip no more, the fireflies were around the lake in the brush lighting up so nicely. When it grew dark we went to the Observatory and they were there too! Along the lake they were in the brush along the hiking trail on the opposite side of the water and near the observatory, they were on both sides where the little bridge crosses the water. According to my partner who has seen tons of fireflies in Virgina, our sighting had a "medium amount" of fireflies.

Snakes and alligators to come...
