Prop 2. - Texas Bans Gay Marriage and anything that resembles it.

The voting results were very sobering to me. I thought, "Hey maybe we can at least win Houston. Houston is a diverse metropolitan city with educated and enlightened people.", but we didn’t even come close here. The results were:

Texas: 76.25% for, 23.74% against
Austin: 60% for, 40% against
Dallas: 66.45% for, 33.55 against
Houston: 72.48% for, 27.52 against

Our precinct was worse.

I did some checking and the law was already on the books (guess when it started…9/1/2003 when we got here, couldn’t believe it), this just put it in the constitution.

Here's the language of the new Texas constitutional amendment:

Article I, Texas Constitution, (The Bill of Rights) is amended by adding Section 32 to read as follows:
Sec. 32. (a) Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.
(b) This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.

Remember in March 2000 when California passed Prop 22? This was also a constitutional amendment which banned gay marriage. The results were:

California: 61.4% for, 38.6% against
Los Angeles: 58.6% for, 41.4% against
San Diego: 62.7% for, 37.3% against
San Francisco: 31.9% for, 68.1% against

Here's the language of the California amendment:

SECTION 1. This act may be cited as the "California Defense of Marriage Act."

SECTION 2. Section 308.5 is added to the Family Code, to read:

308.5. Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

Thank goodness it didn't go as far as Texas. After this amendment passed, many domestic partnership laws were passed giving some rights to domestic partnerships that married couples currently enjoy.
